THANKSGIVING DAY WEDDIHG.
Tim home of Rev. and Mrs. W. J.
Groat at Silver Lake Kansas was the
scene of a pretty Thanksgiving Day
wedding when their daughter Miss
Loubellu was united In marriage to
O. J. Evans son of Mr. and Mrs. W
P. Evans of near Beaver.
Both of theso young peuple are well
aud favorably knuwn to a largo num-
ber of Denver people and are held in
the highest ejteem by all who know
them. Mim Luubulle came' to Heaver
a number of years ago with her pur-
ents llev. Croat being chosen to the
pastorate of the Beaver M. E church
She later accepted employment In the
ofllce of the Register of Deeds where
she worked until last summer when
ahe resigned bur position to return to
the homo of her parents at Silver Lake
She was a most elliclent helper In the
register's ofllce and it was with regret
that her resignation was accepted. Iu
church and social circles as well she
was much appreciated and ail who
knew her admired her for hercheerful
pleasing manner aud her characteris-
tic ability to ever make her presence
oharinlng and agreeable.

WHAT If wo should go to one of our local storekeepers and say: "Here
is a ten-dollar bill; I want you to buy for roo suoh-aud-such an artlclo
made so-and-so this color that size and deliver It to mo at your
convenience Bay 30 days."
Along comes another townsman and another still another until CO of
us all living hero in our community shall huvo placed In tho hands of tho
storekeeper a sum amounting to a thousand dollars with similar Instructions.
We would then have treated our local storekeeper with the same liberal-
ity as we who have been buying of the mall order houses have treated these
monopolistic concerns. We would have then supplied him with cash capital
sufficient to buy what we ordered and give him a fair profit on his deal.
' YeB. we would thus enable blm to tako a trip to lhe city buy from tho
manufacturers the articles desired chip them to us spend a day or two
enjoying himself If ho bo pleased and leavo him a fair percentage of profit
over and ubovo tho cost of the articles ana his expenses.
DO WE DO THIS! YES WE DO NOT.
But tills Is exactly what we do with the mall order man In tho big city.
We send him tbo money In advance Ho has tho ueo of our cash for the
purchaso of his merchandise Ho sends us whatever ho chooses and If we
do not like it we can whistle for our money.
He takes our money and buys that which we have ordered. Then he may
take a trip to Europe If he so wishes -til at our expense.
Few of us roallzo that we the peoplo outsldo tho big cities furnish tho
capital for tho conduct of the big mall order houses. Wo do not stop to
think that It Is our money which Is building those great structures which are
tho pride of Chicago and porno other cities. Wo do not stop to consider that
wo are tbo capitalists who are supplying the sinews of war against our own
local business men.
JUST THINK OF IT DIVIDENDS OF FIFTEEN MILLIONS OF DOL-
LARS PAID TO THE BIO MEN IN THE MAIL ORDER BUSINESS AS A
PROFIT EACH YEAR ON OUR MONEY.
We send tho cash In advance to them. They require practically no In-
vestment except for the printing of their catalogs and other stationery. They
are doing tholr business on tho money which we poor deluded country
dwellers send to them when wo nro only1 cutting our own throats and help-
ing to diminish tho prestige and strength of our local tradesmen.
What would bo the result if wo ehould bond our dollars In advance to
our local storekeepers and give them the samo chance to make profits with-
out Investment? What would be tho efTect on our community?
It would mean prosperity for us all. It would mean more taxes to be
paid by our business men Improvements of a municipal character better
school facilities better street lighting better paving etc.
Of course our local storekeepers do not expect us to do business In this
way. Yet why Bhould we not? We do it with tho mall order houses and
when wo are fooled wo tako our medicine because wo aro ashamed to let
our friends know how wo have been buncoed.
But we should do this wo ehould glvo all of our business to those men
who have mado their Investments In our town who are trying to build up
tho community who are paying tho taxes and who aro helping us to Increase
the value of our real estate holdings. We all know that the value of our
houses and lots here In town will be Increased as the community advances
In prosperity and the only way for the community to advance Is for our busi-
ness men to do an Increased business.
WE SHOULD PATRONIZE THE MEN WHO ARE TRYING TO HELP
OURSELVES. We all hopo to advance We all hope to becomo proypv'tOMS.
.Whenivo 'buy frora tlia jjall offflar house we urn helping monopoly to
nut our storekeepers out of business. When we send a dollar to tho big city
Instead of spending It at borne we are depriving our children of some of
tho opportunities for education which"1 they aro entitled to.
Let us spend our dollars here at homo with tho merchants who are try-
ing to keep up the schools and other local advantages which we cannot havo
for our children unless wo have a prosperous community.
Let us not forget that the mall order man docs not pay any of our taxes
In this town. Tho taxes arc paid by the local business men at least the
greater proportion and tho more business we do with thorn the mure taxes
they must pay.
LET US WAKE UP TO A CONSIDERATION OF OUR BEST IN-
TERESTS. LET US SUPPORT THOSE WHO HELP US AND OUR CHILDREN.
Rev. A O McCown a resident of the
Clear creek country twenty years ago
preached at tho Christian church Sun-
day morning and evening. He waa
greeted by a larae congregation among
whom were many of his old friends and
neighbors of the pioneer days. Mor-
day night ho praached nt Elmwood
school house. When a youngater he
attended school at Elmwood.
J O Edwards Jr and O. H. Stew-
art both of Ponoa City were here the
past week attending the school land
sale. Both made purchases of land
and were greatly plcaaed with the bar-
gains whioh they felt they had re-
ceived. They each called around at
the Hsiialu ofllce aud ordered this
paper sent to their addreas so that they
might keep in touch with future de-
velopments and conditions out this
way. They expressed themselves as
being very favorably Impressed with
conditions here and found the country
far superior to anything that they had
expected to ilnd. The evidence of the
crops which have already been mark-
eted and the amount still to be mark
eted was a great revelation to them.
They had no Idea that such monster
crops could be produced out here.
The proapeota for next -year'a crop
looked mighty good to them too and
they said if anybody wanted their
opinion as to Bearer county's possibil-
ities they could truthfully give it a
most hearty recommendation. The
Idea these two men had before coming
to Beaver county and seeing for them-
selves ia the erroneoua idea that pre-
vaila in the minds of a great many
people who do not know this country
and who have had no opportunity of
learning of the wonderful possibilities
here for those who possess a little got-up-and-get
and who confine them-
atlvaa to the ataple produota of the
county which seldom full. We have
aaid it many timea before and we ex
pect to aay It many times again Bea-
ref ia the Ideal spot for dlvcraiflrd
farming. And when our farmera
learn the lesson that they must all
learn sooner or later and that is that
they must raise more kalllr maize
feterlta and othor ataple crops and
havo some hogs poultry Food brood
mares young mules and high grade
slock and dairy cows around them. In
that day wo are going to And more
prosperoua farmers to tlia square mile
in Beaver county than in any section
of thn southwest and wo will be able
to make the rest of the state sit up and
take notice. Big acreages of wheat
aid broomenrn are all right when the
s nion Is right and the market la right
but these conditions cannot be de
pended upon and those who pin their
faith exclusively to such crops run a
big chance to lose more often than
they win.
BEAVER'S '"WAR" WITH TURKEY.
Las tVeek we made a request througli
the columns of the Herald that all our
readors favor us with a list of their
Thanksgiving guests. We failed to
receive a single reply to our request
and had about concluded that Beaver
people had passed the day In a moat
secluded manner but by dilligeut In-
quiry and quizzing nround we managed
to Una that a large numbor of our peo-
ple entertained on that day and it waa
not their lack of hospitality but their
extreme re'serve In giving ua any news
which might seem to indicate that
they were anxious to have their
'names In the paper." We have per-
haps missed many but so far as we
