GREAT FALL FESTIVAL
Beaver County Fair Will
September.
SEPTEAIBER
At a meeting of the executive committee of tho Beaver Conntv
Fair Association which was held at the olllco of President L. L.
Long Saturday evening it was decided to hold our annual fair this
year on September 17-18-19-20. This date was agreed upon as be
ing the most feasible inasmuch as it comes between the dates of the
fall festivities at Meade and Liberal Kansas and many of tho at-
tractions billed for those places will bo procured for Beaver. Com
mittecs have been selected or will soon bo named and tho work is
being pushed to make the fair this fall four days of real profit and
pleasure.
Suitable prizes will bo awarded exhibits in all departments and
we trust Beaver county residents who have products to exhibit will
carefully preserve and preparo them so that they may make a good
showing and a worthy one for Beaver county's agricultural possi-
bilities. Products are raised la Beaver county which if it is possi-
ble to procure their exhibition at the county fair will make a show-
ing that would open the eyes of those who have been prone to look
upon our fair land as a waste and desert spot. We hope tho farm-
ers will take pride in selecting their best in grain fruit stock etc.
and bring them in not only carrying off many of tho valuable prizes
offered but also advertising their own thrift and success as well as
that of the entire county.
It is hoped to make up an exhibit from our county fair for the
Oklahoma State Fair which will be held at Oklahoma City Septem-
ber 2-lth to October 5th and if wo can make a creditable showing
for our county at the state fair It will be a big advertisement for us.
Let us all get the proper Interest in this matter and go to work
with vim and vigor and a determination to make it a success. Not
a citizen of the county can afford to
busy!

Band Concerts.
The Beaver Bands gave another of
their splendid concerts on the street
Thursday evening and the muiio was
much appreciated by a large number
of our town's people who came out to
hear them. A rude band stand which
was hastily arranged for the occasion
was provided by anchoring a large hay
frame in tho middle of tho street.
This answered the purpose' very well
except it was entirely to? small. It
seems that a baud stand might be
erected at a very small cost and it
would be a great convenience to the
bands in giving their weekly concerts.

W. .1. Jones Dead.
This community received with In-
tense regret lnt week tho news of the
death of W. J. Jones who died at Col-
orado City Colorado Tuesday of last
week. The remains were brought back
to eastern Kansas for burial in accord-
ance with the request of tho dying
man and laid to rest besldo relatives
r?ho had proceeded him across the dark
and silent river.
Mr. Jones had been In ill health for
many Touths having suffered a scvorc
attack v ' pneumonia two years ago and
from the effects of which he never fully
recovered. A complication of diseases
gradually sapped away his strength
and life and for .nonths the end had
not been unexpected. Mr Jones had
bocn spending several weeks in eastern
Kansas with his daughter and other
relatives In the hope of getting relief
but ho grew steadily worse and decided
to try Colorado. His condition was so
critical however that bodied the same
day ho reached that place.
William Jacob Jones was born In
Holahchd Wales April Vd 1803. He
came to America in 1SS0 ond. together
with other members of his family lo-
cated In Nebraska. Later he removed
to Emporia Kansas where he was
married to Miss Elizabeth Jones In 1801
To this union ono child a girl was
born and with the birth of the child
the mother's life was claimed. The
daughter resides with relatives at Em-
poria Kansas
Fifteen years ago Mr. Jones came to
Bpavcr county and settled on a ranch
seven miles east of Beaver on the river.
He has resided there since accumulat-
ing much land and has developed a
good stuck farm' being particularly in-
terested in fine horses of which ho own-
ed many.
Mr. Jones was a good citizen and an
honorable and upright man. He had
few cncmicB and made friends wher-
ever he went. He numbered his friends
by his acquaintances in this county and
his untimely death Is mourned by all
Charged With Heinous Crime.
August Nelson of Surprise was tak-
en in custody Saturday upon n charge
ofassault with intent to kill. TIN
complaining witness was Mrs. Sarah M.
Thompson of Twin Mounds who was
tho victim of the alleged attack. Dep-
uty Sheriff Lawrence McCabo made (he
arrest and brought the accused before
Justice II. 1). Mceso before whom lie
plead "'not guilty" and was released
upon $500.00 bond to appear beforo the
same officer Monday August 12th. for
his preliminary hearing.
Mrs. Thompson who Is a wldor; and
ives alone on her furm was aroused
from her sleep at an early hour Mon-
day morning about i! o'clock to find
an intruder in her home whom she
recognized as Nelson althojgh a mask
hid his face. She demanded of him
what he was doing there whereupon he
seized her and choked her into uncon-
sciousness. She believes that he forced
a poison strychnine into her mouth
and compelled her to swallow It for
beforo becoming unconscious she felt
something in her mouth but refused to
swallow until choked. She did not re-
gain her senses until about six o'clock
and being extremely thirsty took a
drink of water. She becamo violently
ill at once and was unable to leave the
house to summon help. Finally in the
afternoon sho managed to get out to
tho mail box with a card which the
rural carrier found and delivered to a
near neighbor and they came to her
assistance That she did not lose her
life is probably due to tho fact that an
over-dose of the poison was given.
Mrs. Thompson is a woman of about
sixty years of age and is highly respect-
ed by all who know her. The sympa--thy
of the entire community is vfith
her and all are astonded that she
should have been the victim of such a
brutal attack.
