east of Clinc and proceed to Beaver then on west to the mouth of
Coldwater creek which is near tho site of old Hardcsty and thence
across the divide to Guymon and Boise City terminating at the

low-grade line to the west.
II. Leone Miller is president of the W. S. & G. and has been

Woodward the past week attending to
legal business. Mr. Herod is secretary
of tho Woodward County Fair Associ-

be held September 1(1-11-12-13. That
county always puts up a rattling good
fair and now that we have 'convenient

Very frequently tho Hkrai.h re-
ceives reqticHK fur sample copies of
the paper from persons in states in all
parts of the Union and ninety-nine
out of a hundred of such requests Invn-
riably say "I am Interested in your
town or county and desire to hco a
copy of the county scat paper for I
cftnsidcr tho local newspaper the key-
note to tho business and social status
of the community." We are always
glad to send the sample copies of the
Herald but sometimes wo wonder
just what impression tlio inquirer
wjll get of tlio "buslncis status" of
the town when ho searches tho adver-
tising columns In vain for some evi-
dence o'f the business concerns repre-
sented hero. We havo them but you
would scarcoly know It by referring to
the local papers.
'The Herald has ulnays tried to
further tho interests or Beaver and
Denver County aud has used column
after column of space hi boosting for
enterprises which wo deemed would
bo beneficial to the town and tho bus-
iness pcoplo of tho town but tho ma
terials for getting out a newspaper
coine high and labor cannot be obtained
for nothing and we sometimes almost
reach the limit. Subscriptions arc only
a drop in the bucket and barely pay
for tho blank stock on which the paper
is printed to say nothing of material
and labor. The paper must make its
support from its advertising matter
and when it doesn't get that thwro Is
only one deduction anil that is it
cannot keep up its standard of cfll-
cicucy be tlie factor for good that It
would bo a tho community and tho
outside wurld looks upon It as a dead
representative of n dead town and
they don't miss it far.
If a town is alive you will find tlio
local paper full of good live attract
ive advertisements and peoplo arc
spending their money thero Farmers
drhu for miles around to market their
produce and buy their supplies be-
cause tho merchants Invito their trade

they have for sale.
People do read advertisements and
they do spend their money vth.tli08C.
who advertise. This Is proven by tho
big mail order concerns which started
in on a small scale advertised and sold
their goods. Hundreds of dollars in
cash goes out of Beaver and Beaver
county every year which could bo kept
at home. Even near-by towns get o
good sharo of our trade because they
go after it.
This article is not written to chastise
ou.' home merchants only to Interest
them in what we consider tho ad-
vancement of our town and their own
welfare. If Hoaver didn't havo a
newspaper an effort would bo made to
secure uno and patronage would be
guaranteed because everybody wants
a good live paper in the town. Why
not support the one wbicli has been
hore for years always sought to ad-
vance the interests of th community
and is found boosting for everything
that is for tho betterment of Beaver?
Wo are not asking charity but we do
feel it is time for us to wake up get
the spirit of progress and meet our
competitors on their own ground

From the above number-of candi-
