COAL $40 A TON IN OKLA-
HOMA. A County Closes Its Buildings
and Gives Fuel to the
Citizens.
The county offices at Beaver in tho
Oklahoma Panhandlo have boon closed
and tli ton day' supply of coal for
heating tho county building has been
distributed among the citizens of tho
town and surrounding country to keop
them from freezing. That is told in a
message rocelved horo today from
George II. Hcaley county Judgo nt
Beaver and a cattleman there rii.ee the
early '80s Forty dollars a ton has
been offered there for coal. With the
theremometer rnnging around 18 de-
grees below zero It is impossible to
get tho freighters to go to tne railroads
for more until tho weather moderates
Hcaley lays:
"We have ow passed through three
weeks of tho most protraeted and so-
voro weather thta country has exper
ienced In thirty years snow to the
depth ol thirteen inches covers the
ground obliterating entirely all the
grass. TjangOtcattlo aro subsisting on
a ration of oil cake alono and that is
gntting low. Reports of losses are
caro coming In. Sixteen yearling steers
are reported frozen out of one bunch
last night. We have feed for thirty
days."
Ho reports this the worst snow and
weathor slnco tho great blizzard of the
early '80s when all cattle regardless
of ago or condition that lodged ngaiDst
the "drift fenco" in tho Northorn Tex-
as Panhandle wore frozen in one night.
Horses ho says have a better chance
than cattle as they paw tho snow away
and get grass and they will not lie
down and frcezo ns cattlo do after
standing a long tlmo.
Tho foregoing report wo tako from
tho Kansas City Star nnd tho Star got
it from Guthrie but why such a report
was' thrown to the world on the wings
of tho wind wo don't knuw.
Wo Interviewed Judge Healy In re-
gard to tho matter and he explained
his part In the matter as follows:
I Ho said ho had written a letter to a
friend (at Wichita we think) nnd In
the lotte'r he told of the dlllloulty of
getting feed to the cattle. Ho say he
did not state that tho offices at the
court house had been closed but un
less tho weather moderated in ten
days or two weeks that the offices at
the court liouso would havo to be clos
ed for want of fuel as tho county com
missioners had ordered tho janitor to
sell conl to peoplo who were out of
fuel to keep them from freezing.
As to tho '$40 n ton for coal" he
may have put that in tho letter because
ho had heard Sheriff Pcckham say ho
would glvb $10 for a ton of coal on a
cuitsin day.
HERE IS TITE TKUTIT.
Tho facts are that Beaver county
has suffered really less In this storm
than any osher place wo havo beard of
away from a railroad. There undoubt-
edly has been somo poople in tho coun-
ty who havo been cold and maybe
hungry. But even suoh Bases as this

bodo In Beaver county la of thn kind
that will dlvld6 the last loaf or the
lant hundrod pounds of coal with his
neighbor in such cases as this.
There was about the usual amount
ot coal 'on hands at the beginning of
tho storm. Cut of course was soon used
up In tho extromely cold weather. Tho
snow was more than two feet deep af
ter it had settled and It was a big job
to break a road through it; but when
CO cents a hundred was offered for
hauling coal farmers and teamsters
soon made a road and brought in coal
Tho highest price we know of paid for
coal was 120 a ton.

this last season but much of this was
still in tho fields and could not bo got
out to the cattle. Undoubtedly a good
many cattlo must havo perished of
cold' and hunger but mi far tho loss (s
not nearly so great as was expected.
Tho report that the merchants had
run out of provisions was considerably
exsgerated. Tha Beavor Mercantilel

A Blizzard That Missed the
City of Beaver.
On Monday This week wo received
the first nowf pnpors that have reached
us from railroad points slnco Friday
of last week. The Liberal Domoerat
reached us Monday and Mcndo Globo
and Englcwood Leadur-Trlbuno camo
to us Tuesday.
Tho Liberal Democrat had an item
headed ''Cold Wavo Coming" which
reads as follows. "What promises to
be the coldest wavo ot tho season is
due hero to-night (Friday) or tomor-
row morning. Dispatches from Hutch-
inson just received ray it is l.r degrees
below zero there. Three Rook Island
trains nro snow-bound between Mullln-
villo and Hutchinson A heavy snow
and a high wind nccompanlcs the
storm "
Tho Meade Globe says: "Last Fri-
day night a blizzard oqtml in severity
to that of twenty-six years Bgo swept
over tho southwest Kansas plains car-
rying a tenipuraturo of 10 to lCdegrces
b'low zero. In tho evening UljO to 300
of our people had assembled at the op-
era liouso to witness tho performance
of "Mrs. Brlggsof tho Poultry Yard'"
and when they camo out of tho build-
ing obout 11 p. tn they were greeted
with a blinding snow tliiit cooled them
off In a jiffy and inado them fuel like
they IimiI been plunged headlong Into
a snow bank.
''As good luck would havo it all
reached their abodes In safety."
The Knglouood Lcador-Tribiinu's re-
port tho shows that the storm was get-
ting worse ob It progressed southeast-
ward. Following is that paper's stoun
report:
"Owing to a suddcu drop In tho tem-
perature last Friday night and a high
wind which piled the snow In big
drifts tho outgoing train Saturday
morning stuck up In n snow bank about
seven miles out The local followed
out behind tho passenger and when it
was discovered they could get no fur-
ther Mr. Shaffer brakeman on tho
local camo back to town to givo out
tho Information. Ho arrived at tho
depot but his hands and feet wore
badly frozen. Tho thermometer reg-
istered 14 bolow zero at tho tlmo for
tho departure of the train and a stiff
wind was blowing from Iho north
which added to th unploneantnes of
the situation. Thu trains '"anaged to
get baok to town l.n tho evening but
up to Tuesday morning no train has
gone out and no mall has come in since
Friday morning though a train was
reported to hnvo started from Wichita
and would arrivo in Englewood some-
time Tuesday night."
Tho reports coining from nil over
tho central west aro all ot tho same
character. It has been tho worst and
most extended winter storm that has
boon experienced slnco a weather rec-
ord has been kept. Tnero has beer
a winter or two when the thermometer
marked colder weathor than has come
this winter but those cold spoils only
lasted n few hours or at most a vory
fuw days when the weather would
ehango tho mercury would begin to
climb ard In a tow days wo would get
a temporaturo that seldom went below
20 obovo zoro. This winter howover
has been altogether different. Tills
cold spell commenced on D?cemborl7
and since Christmas the mercury has
lingered around tho zero mark most of
tho time and several times ran as low
as 12 to 18 bolow zero. It was not thfr
oxtremlty of tho cold at any time that
hurt but tho long continued frigidity
tliat caused the suffering umong both
people and animals. Tho birds rab-
bits and nil other wild things havo
suffurrd for food as well as from cold.
Tho deop snow covered tho grass and
weed seeds and even tho skunkberrics
and hackborries in tho sand hills ic
tho birds could not got to them and
many must havo perished from hunger
and cold .
