Although the present term of the
dis riet curt lias been one oltho most
iuipoituut we baro ever bad and re
quired nearly doublo the number of
jurors ever before summoned yrt the
expense on the county lor these juror
lias only aniounWd to 1805.00 or
about $250.00 more than the amount
paid last fear and this increase- can
nearly be accounted for by reason of
tbe increase in the per diem of jarors
to 12 00 prr df.y InMcad oi 91.00 as
formerly paid.
Jude I'dcsoan is to be commended
for the speedy and economical manner
in which he haa conducted the term.
The doeket is pruntically cleared and
and while no caxrs wero allowed to drag
along and create unnecessary expense
yet btery litigant was given all the time
that could reasonable bo asked in the
iiial of his cause.
In tho Grand Jury'a esamiration of
the county offices they found fifty
M-vcn record books in the cluls office
twenty one each in tbo I'robalo Judge
aud District Clerks office and twenty
seven in the treasurers office all of
whioh are wholly unprotccjed from loss
of ire. A vault fur their safe keeping
ia itaperattv and should be constructed
It would bo imposaiblo to stsle a
monetary consideration that their toss
would euta'.l because many of these
records once lust coule uever be
restored.
The appa in the raie of the saloon
application or J. A. Ulen wag decided
against ills applicant this week. Judue
Psncoast boiding that thirty resident
t si payers iu the ward wbereiti tie
loon ia to be located are required
before a Lclitibn can be granted.
Owing to tun fact ihst nearly balf
of the reeiuenta el the town are bold
inp boruVatesds in tho couotiy there
ale Iras than Iblrly bona fide resideet
taxpayers in any ward in the t'wn.
It is rumored now that the saloon

The grand jury adjourned Tuesday
afternoon having returned eight indie
monts during their senion. They
also returned a spctiul report to Judge
Pitnrusjt in which they recommend
that the county commissioners imme-
diately provido fire proof protection
for the numerous records in the county
offices und further iccommend tbe
immediate construction of a j ill with
sufficient cells aud other equipments
as will make it possible to confine our
prisoners at home with romu certainty
of kecpinir them in the Jul. During
tbe past year tho county has paid out
fur tin- keeping of prisoners at the
Outhrie jsilr a sum nearly xufficietit to
have coustiuctcd a building of till-
character. Charles Dunlap of Liberal Kalians

ACQUIT I'KD.
"We llie jury empsnnclled and sworn
to try the issues iu tho above entitled
cuuse. do upon our oaths find thu
del'endant not git lty.
Such w.is the verdict which tbo jury
returned last Sunday morning in the
ciiso of the territory against Deo W
Craven charged with tbe murder of
J.l) Wutkins
The case came on for trial Wedocs
day morning snd lasted until a late
hour Saturday evening. It was closely
contested und ably conducted by th
attorney for both sides. Tbe ovidence
was brought out Cully and the instruc
tions of the court wire absolutely Isir
uud impartial.
Tbe principal tacts as brought out in
thu evidence was that on Aug. '29 IU02
while reluming fium tho Gurrvtl
pimiuffiee Wutkins rode to the home ol
Craven to discuss sumo difference rela-
tive to the schools' in their dbtricl.
Thst w'lile in Cravens house bo curved
him aud csllcd him vile epltheU in
thu prexencu of iiii wita and family.
I'liiil Craven ordered him from the
Iiouho aud he rufuseJ to leave. That
thereupon Craven erosicd the room
setured a revolver and shot him two
or thru- limes. Thu testimony as tu
the number uf shots which took effect
cimlbcled ss wl-o did tho testimony
uiuct-ruiiig the position nf the men ui
thu time the shots were fired'.
Fmiu a conversation nith one of the
jurors sfter the verdict had been
returned it seems that tbe jury in thrir
dixcutsion of the case considered first;
whether thu evidence showed thst
VV at kins had abused Craven iu his own
home; whether ho bad refused to leave
wbeu ordered Irom the house aud if
so was lln-ru sufficient provocation to
warrant Craven in ejecting him even
if liccosary Intake his life in doing so
Aud upon considering tbo evidence the
jury returned their verdict justifying
Craven in ibe steps ho had taken
