Fleetwood and Cooper escape from
tbo Meade jail.
Last Sunday evening shortly after
dark Fleetwood nnd Cooper
escaped Irom the Meade jail and after
securing a horse and buggy departed
to tbo northeast where a lew inilcs
from town they stolo nnother home.
From tho report which roach us it
appears that before locking the
prisoners in their culls for the night
Sheriff Givler opened tbo door leading
into the coridor to hand them a bucket
of water nud us bo reached iu with it
tho pritoncr Cooper grabbed his hand
and jerked him inside Where
Fleetwood struck him several time
over the back of tbo bead with a pieev
of iron they bad broken from their beds
Qivlcr was pounded into insensibility
and sverly injured. Ho was locked in
the cell and after securing his rovnlvet
the Dtlsoncrs walked out being bare
headed and baro footed.
Tho Meade jail is considered one of
the most scoure in tho southwest. It
is so arranged that beforo entering the
corridor the jailer can lock all prisoners
within their cells it not being necessary
to tako any el.aoces with prisoners.
Sheriff Givlcr baa always been a won
careful officer and brave to a fault
Probably for tho renson that bo did not
fear "tbctu. be took tho chance of
entering tho corridor before securing
them in their cells and in this manner
offered thetu an opportunity for the
assault which they promptly made.
Tbe latest mnvu of tho school bonk
trust is to iuttigato the passage ol
resolution!! condemning Governor
Ferguson for vetoing the text book
