With tho close or this week's busincsa
tlio writer's conncclion with tlio Her.
alii ceases. It is not without regret
that wo lay down our pen and say adieu
to tlio readers of tho paper. For a little
ovi;r two years wu havo published tliu
Herald and it is for tlio patrons of
tho paper to say whether or not wo havo
accomplished anything in tho journalis-
tic line. Financially tho Herald has
prospered fairly well probably as well
as it deserved. Wo (hunk tho many
subscribers and tho business men of this
and surrounding towns who havo so lib-
erally patronized us. Our reasons for
polling wcro not that wo had any fault to
find with tho Herald or ils patrons.
Wo wcro getting aloDg well enough in
every way and sold out simply because
wo got our price. During tho brief
peiiod wo havo published tho Herald
wo havo transacted business with ever
half tho people in Beaver county and
can only say that if w? ever publish a
newspaper again wo hope it will be
among as good a class of pcoplo as those
who live in Denver county.
Now in turning over tho office to Mr.
Daves wo bespeak for him tho earnest
cooperation and support of all tlioeo who
Iiavo hcrctoforo been patron of the
paper. Mr. Daves is not n new man
here as all well know.
Wishing unbounded success to all the
patrons of tho Herald and hoping
that tho paper will always havo smooth

Respectfully

A governor of a stato or territory is
generally suppesed to work for tho inter-
ests of nil parts of his stato or territory
alike. Governor Barnes sccmn to bo an
exception if tho press dispatches con-
cerning his work in Washington aro
rue. Our governor is now in tho capi-
tal of the nation actively advocating the
paseago of Callahan's bill turning west-
ern Oklahoma over to the big cowmen
and eastern syndicates for tho benefit of
the school fund. Tho Herald believes
in fair play to all. Wo nro not In favor
of any legislation which would ho unjust
--ffito tho big cowmen and drivo them from
the country neither aro wo in favor of
legislation which will give tho big cow-
men and eastern monied men control of
tho west half of tho territory for bx
years to tho exclusion of men who wibh
to take houiebtcads here. Tho present
conditions are good enough and will bo
uoiveisally satisfactory aa long as tho
law is enforced. No greater -menace to
western Oklahoma could possibly bo de-
vised than this bill of Delegate Calla-
han's. Governor Barnes is losing friends
by the hundred over tho territory men-
tioned by reason of his actions in this
matter ami if ho will take time to find
out what effect the law would have ho
might sco fit to tako a different court-e.
Wo do not believe that Governor Barnes
would thus wilfully give tho west a black
eye if hu knew it In his desire to
mako the school fund bieeer ho has
overlooked the effect tho proposed law
would have on Western Oklahoma. It
is not too late for the Governor to desist
in his efforts to havo the bill passed. If
it becomes a law its promoters will bo
forever dead politically in I ho western
half of tho territory.

Washlugton Feb. 5. Thcro is a new
scheme to rcstoro harmony to tho ranks
of tho democratic party. It h a plan
to declaro for tho frco coinage of silver
leaving the question of ratio to bo de-
termined by legislation and circum-
stance?. Tho projectors of the move-
ment bclievo that on a platform liko
this tho patty can bo reunited.
For socio days the plan has been un-
der discussion among certain democratic
senators aud representatives. I hey
havo mado somo headway and being
encouraged by tho number of converts
which they havo won aio now picparing
to lay tho idea beforo n largo number of
domocrats throughout the country. Al-
ready it is claimed W. 0. Whitney has
been consulted and has given his sanction
to tho scheme.
William J. Bryan has not been con-
sulted. Tho democrats who nro moving
in this matter havo no idea that Mr.
Bryan will ever consent to anything but
an outandout 1G to 1 freo coinage
platform. IflGtol is abaudoned he
must bo abandoned with it. But say
these democrats who aro trying to patch
tip harmony tho country has repudiated
1G to 1 once and will bo suro to do so
again. On that issue tho part was
badly beaten and it will be beaten again
if it stands by the old platform. If the
democraoy is to havo any Bhow of suc-
cess it must to somo extent at least
shift the issue
"The country is for pilver and for
plenty of money" said ono ef tho cham-
pions of tho new scheme today "but it
is not for dishonest money. It will
never consent to making 44 cents' worth
of silver as good as a gold dollar. It
will never vote to pay all obligations
debts wages and pensions in 44-ccnt
dollars. That is what beat us in '9G
and it will beat us in 1000 unless we
havo senso enough to changa our posi-
tion. But if wo stand simply for tho
frco coinage of silver for restoration of
itfia noney of our father? leaving the
ratio to bo determined afterward that is
quito another matter. On that issuo we
could carry tho country."
Tho men who arc behind this new
plan aro in earnest and they arc in high
standing in tho party. They propono to
go ahead with their propaganda. Their
hopo is first to secure tho cooperation of
all eastern democrats aud then the help
of tho democracy of such states as In-
diana Illinois Wisconsin Michigan and
Iowa They even believe they can carry
tho democracy of a number of tho
southern states with them and that by
the time tho democratio national cous
vention of 1000 is on they will bo able
to control a majority of its delegates.

Tho cost of tho Cuban war to Spain
from February 1S05 to tho end of 1807
is officially estimated at 210 millions of
dollars besides the arrears duo tho Cu-
ban treasury amounting to 40 million
dollars. It costs something to fight a
peoplo determined to bo frco.

In some parts of Russia thcro exists a
famine which is dcsciibcd as being
worso than that of 1801. Editors of
Uussian nowspapcrs havo been forbidden
to refer to tho matter. Dispatches stato
that tho farmers aro feeding their half-
starved horses and cattle with the
thatched roofa of their houses aud barns
llcporls from Alaska convey inform-
ation of the finding of now gold lipids of
fabulous value and people aro flocking
in flint direction in unnumbered thous-
ands. Tho proportion of all thoso going
who will get rich will probably bo about
the same as thoso who "caught some-
thing" in tho Louisiana lottery about
one in ten thousand.
In feeding experiments with steers at
tho Oklahoma Experiment Station to

corn meal and kafiir meal tho steers fed
kaffir meal made slightly butter gains
than those fed corn meal. That tho
difference in coins was not caused by
difference in animals is shown by tho
fact that tho animals mado practically
equal gains when tho lots wcro fed for a
period of twq weeks on a mixturo of
cbual parts of corn and kaffir meal.

says; Word reached hero this evening
of a pitched battle between cowboys and
cattlo thioves west of Glasgow near tho
Dakota line. Ono of tho thieves is ro-
ported dead and tho cowboys nro in pur-
suit of tho other members of the gang
who havo crossed into Dakota. During
tho present winter stockmen in the north-
ern part of the stato bavo sustained so-
vcro losses from thieves driving their
cattlo across into Dakota whero tho
brands were changed and tho stock dis-
posed of. Tho cowboys organized and
yesterday about noon surprised tho
thieves in possession of twenty head of
stock. The posse opened fire which was
icturncd by tho desperadoes and for an
hour a runniug fight was maintained.
The cowboys aro armed and trying to
overtake the men. Stockmen aro back-
ing tho cowboys in their chase.
You cattlemen who think you havo a

Judge Harrison's Jersey cow dropped
two calves last week. Just ono year pre

two calves and ono of her heifers also
had twins and has since had ono calf.

that thcro is lots of profit in such s'ock.

In tho last twenty years tho balance

of course as tho Popocrats would say

''Marcus A. Hanna is a plutocrat."
"Marcus A. Hanna is tho terror of
Populists and Democrats and tbo most
able worker in tho republican party."
"Marcus A. Hanna is thu most per-

Tho Oklahoma Experiment Station is

Tho German authorities in their anxi-
ety to tako a littlo revengo out of tho
United States on account of tho tariff
law mado a very foolish move. They
issued an order prohibiting tho admission
of fresh American fruits into Germany.
Then tho liuudcsrath got scared and
rescinded tho order limiting its effect to
fruits affected by the San Joso scale and
damaged fruits and plants. Thoso Ger-
mans got to thinking about that retalia-
tory clauso in tho American tariff law
aud concluded they couldn't afford to
risk tho measure. They also probably
figured it out that America could buy
in England all tho manufactured goods
she now buys from Germany and just us
cheap as tho Germans can mako them.

Tho Tramp's Speech.
It was growing late says tho New Or-
leans Picayune. Tho lido of humanity
that earlier in tho evening had ebbed
and flowed through tho streets of tho
great city had swcft onward leaving
tho strango and almost appalling srnso of
desolation that cornea when thu noises of
tho town aro hushed.
In front of a saloon whoso lights hhono
out bright across tho pavement stood a
tramp unshorn ragged dirty disgust-
ing. Ho watched with envious eyes tho
mon who passed in and out through the
bwinging doore aud then ho turned his
eyes toward two young fellows who were
coming down tho street toward him.
They had been drinking deeply and they
stopped heforo tho saloon door and
looked curiously at himf.
'Say" said one "let's give tho tramp
a driuk."
Tho other hilariously consented ond
tho tramp blouchcd intottho saloon at tho
hecU of the two youths? Tho barkeeper
set boforo them glasses and liquors aud
'with a hand that shook tho tramp
poured out a brimming glass and raised
it to his lips.
"Stop" cried ono of
drunkenly; "mako us
poor liquor that doesn't loosen a
tongue.
The tramp hastily swallowed down tho
driuk and as tho liquor coursed through
his blood ho straightened himself and
stood before them with a grace and dig-
nity that all his rags and dirt cosld not
obscure. '
"Gentlemen" said ho' "I look to-night
at you and at myself and it bccms to me
I look upon tho picturo of my lost man'
hood. This bloated j"ice was unco as
young and liindsomo as yours. This
shainbliug figuro onco walked as proudly
as yours a man in tho world of men I
too once had homo and friends and po-
sition. I had a wifo ns beautiful as an
artist's dream ond I dropped the pearl
of her honor aud-respecViu thewlno cup
and Cleopatra like saw it dissolve and
quaffed it down in tho brimming draught.
I had children as sweet and lovely as
the flowers of spring and I saw them
fade and die under blighted curse of a
drunkard father. I had a homo where
lovo lit tho flame upon tho nltar and
ministered before it aud I put out tho
holy fire and darkness and desolation
reigned in its stead. I had aspirations
and ambitions that soared as high as tho
morniug star and I broko and bruised
their beautiful w'mgs and at last
strangled them that I might bo tortured
with their lives no moro. To-day I am
a husband without a wifo a father with
out a child a tramp Willi no homo to
call 1)13 own u man in whom every good
impulse is dead. All all swallowed in
tho maelstrom of drink."
The tramp ceased speaking. Tho glass
fell from hi nerveless fingers and shiv-
ered into a thousand fragments on the
floor. Tho swinging doors pushed open
and shut again and when tho littlo
group about tho bar looked up the tramp
was gone.

Inventive genius has again ovcrcomo
tho difficulties of naturo in tho new
method of crossing Chilcoot Pass the
most formidable obstacle in the road of
of tho gold seekers bent for Klondike.
News comes that tho aerial railroad has
been completed between Chilcoot Pass
and Lake Lindeman. This railway con-
sists of a trolley system running on wires
instead of on tho ground. Tho wires
are stretched on posts from hill to valley
and from valley over tho mountains in'
a way to overcome tho dangers of can-
yons and precipices. Passenger cars are
suspended to these woikod on rollers.
Tho details of this method of aerial
railway aro not fully explained but
whatever tho method it is enough to
know that by its aid tho timo from tide-
water to the headwaters of tho Yukon
river is shortened from a month to a day.
How much peril and hardship this re-
moves from tho travel thoso alone real-
ize who havo crossed the deep canyons
and climbed tho steep glaciers.
This aerial railway may work a new
era in travel through mountainous ro-
gions that canaot bo reached by railways
