From A Soldier.
Beavbu Oici.A. Feb. 2a 1807.
Kuitoh UmiM.i): If you can spare
the space I would like to make a few
suggestions on tho (ubject of a Soldiers'
Homo for the territory of Oklahoma.
A number of old t-oldiirs have been
tuidir tho impression that there was to
l!e a move madn dining the present hes-
Mou of congiess to have tho Fort Supply
reservation set apart for that purpo'sc.
There is no mora dcsirablo location for
Mich an institution 'in tho territory; all
the buildiogs necessary a healthy loca-
tion with an abundance of (ho puiest
water and tho necessary appropriations
and arrangements have been mado by
tho territoml legislature nf put every
thing in running order. Wo havo
watched with much interest tho proceed-
ings of tho prescLt congress for eomo
sign of a move in that direction but all
wo hear about Oklahoma is frco homes!
Wo do dot beliove in that measure wo
had some oxperienco in tiying to get oue
of tlioso claims and had we succeeded
wo would n-)t now bo kicking on paying
Undo Sam for it as wo considered tho
conditions very liberal. But being
hard up we lnul to take our chances
with a 6ccond rato broncho while our
opponent being a man already well-to-
do paid 200 lot ti fast horse and of
course wo were left but wo don t kick.
Wo knnjv that most of our niusclo was
expended over thirty years ago in
running alter and from the boys iu
jray; but with tho samo sense of justice
which wo liopu has ever governed our
actions wo protest against taxing the
great majority of this peoplo to tho
extent of 810000000 for tho benefit of
tho few. All know the conditions and
thousands of disappointed oues would
now gladly pay the reasonable price to
fcccuro a homo but I have digtessod
fioui my subject. Sly object in writing
tiii articlo is tn enlist every old soldier
nnd all friends of old soldiers in tho
cause of securing for our grand territory
u Soldiers' Home. I am familiar with
all partu of tho territory and from my
observation there is no locality taking
everything into consideration that will
compare with Camp Supply for this
purpose aud I hope all who feel inter-
ested iu seeming a homo will soma out
and apeak a food wont for tho cause.
Wi see a bill pending before tho ter-
ritorial legislature askiug the United
States to set apart five acres for a sol-
diers' home. Thiro is no location
tpeciGed and tho supposition is that
thero is a job connected with it a move
to benefit some individual or individuals.
Wo havo among us to-day comrades
who ore helpless aud dependent and
every year adds to tho list. We must
do o nething bo let uh all pull together
und get a place where tho old boys who
are without means or kindred may pass
their last days together and leceivc a
decent burial without publio officials
grutubliug over pauper expense. Each
year wo teo some of our comrades falter
tho step becomes unsteady tho eje dims
thero u that far-away look in tho effort
to comparo the present with tha pas;
the active bratu iiuagiues itself young
again tho fire of patriotism courses
through his veins ho Iccls tho shock of
battle he hoars tho buglo chII tho
rlank of saber bets the glea-niog steel
with heaving breast he ui-es up to nittt
the crash of war when lul ho finds
himself a helpless old man. Can not
I Ilia great people this great nation give
him n homo wherein to end his days
and stno.illi tho way that leadi across
the river to tha other shore where wo
all want to rest on tho btnk under the
trees? Vr.TKUAN.

Tho example of a justico of tho peace
in Greenwood county Kansas might bo
followed in Oklahoma sometimes with
gratifying results. Tho story is from tho
Eureka Messenger and tells how a jus-
tico got even with a lawyer: "A catc
was on trial beforo him and ono of the
attorneys was exceedingly domineering
in his actions and woids aud goaded his
honor so Jul that ho finally gave vent to
his feelings thus: '-Court is adjourned
Mr Attorney you'ro a d n liar and
u scoundrel sir. Court is now in session
If you opcu your head I'll fine you for
contempt."
A bill will bo introduced in tho lcgis-4tnre-oVinp
for a 850000 appropria-
tion; to be used in exhibiting the pro-
iduuts and rwirccs of tho txnitory at
the International exposition to bo held
at Oiunha from Juno to November '98.
Oklahoma took first prize on cotton
wheat and flour at tho World's Fair and
it is proposed to outdo the showing the
(Ciritory made a Chicago. It is in-
tended that Oklahoma Utah New Mex-
ico and the Indian Territory shall unite
in erecting a building to bo used jointly
by them.
Hank Mayse publisher of tho Ash-
land Clipper has been clcik of tho
house live slock committee at Topcka
sitico tho legislature convened but in
addition to his duties there ho has been
writmt: eorto rather plain articles ie
gardiug tho members of the house and
especially tho lady clerks. As "a con-
sequence he was ousted dishonorably
discharged last week by tho populist
house tho members of which ho helped
to elect. Blavso will probably return
homo and write some very warm articles
for tho Clipper.
Elsewhero in this issuo will ho found
an article by an old soldier rolativo to
tho location of u Soldiers' Home at the
abandoned post of Fort Supply. There
is reason in tha veteran's argument and
no reason why a homo should not be
located on the sight of tho old camp. It
would he much better to use ns much of
the reservation ns needed for a soldieis'
homo and throw the balance open to set-
tlement than to cull tho wholo body of
land to some individual with money und
n political pull to bo used as u cuttle
ranch.
Governor Kenfrow vetoed tho bill
abolishing the office of coal oil inspector
in this territory. Tho offico pays about
85000 a year. The governor said that
experience had proven the law to bo a
protection to lifo and property und a
safeguard against fires and that it low-
ered insuranco on every dollar's worth
of property in tho tcrritoiy; that its re-
peal would increase insurance i.itcs and
onablo oil companies to uso Oklahoma
as n dumping ground for inferior nnd
dangerous oils; that since tho enactment
of tho law thof price of oil had not in-
creased whilo a better quality of oil had
been furnished and that tho cost of in-
spection had been paid by tho oil com.
panics themselves. Tho governor rec-
ommended that thu law ho allowed to
stand with tho amendment that all re
jected oils bo prohibited from sale iu the
territory.
Tako a walk through any of our cem-
eteries says an exchange and you will
pass tho last resting place of tho man
who bh w into the empty gun and tho
modest hired girl who lighted tho firo
with kerosene and tho green carpeted
mound that covers the boy that took the
mulo by the tail; while right over yonder
in tho northeast corner tho breeze sighs
through the weeping willows that bend
over tho lonely that told his mother-in-law
that sho was uo lady. Dowu there
in tho pottcr'3 field with his feet stick-
ing out to the blasts of wiutcr and the
blistering rays of tho summer sun nrc
all tho remnants of tho misguided man
who thought ho could whip tho editor
whilo tho broken bones of the man who
would not pay for his paper arc piled up
in ono corner of tho fence. Over near
tlio gate reposes the remains of tho boy
who wont swimming on Sunday and tho
old woman who kept baking powders aud
strychnine sido by side iu the cupboard.
'
The territorial legislature catches it
from all sides. Representative Fergu
son is in receipt of tho following request
from a citizen of his dirtrict: "We are
in need of some legislation in this local-
ity and as wo havo a legislature that is
apparently doing business it has been
suggested by your constituents that you
introduco a bill to compel a circle saw to
run backwards aud to do the same' work
ns if running tho other way providing
penalties etc. Please sec that this bill
goes through as it is of much im-
portance." Up this way we would like
to have a law passed making it a misde-
meanor punishablo by b'75 years in the
penitentiary for a carpenter to uso any
but a round square. Also one compelling
druggists to handle bay rum in chunks.
And a man should be fined fior wearing
any hut patched pants; this would en-
able priuters to stand ou an equal foot-
ing with other people.
War ban opened in earnest over id
Crete between tho Greeks and Turks
.villi Kuland Germany llutsiu nud If
aly chipping iu on the bido. On the
'J2d inst. the ships of tho latter named
nations bombarded a Cictan towu oter
which a Greek flat; had been raised.
The natives toil the flag io out of tho
wet while the firing lasted but hung it
out ognlu afterwards. Many man have
been killed in battle already nnd tho
war threatens to aumo vast proportions.
Tho island of Crcto thientcns to bo
tho catiso of a general European war.
Tho population of tho island is nbout
250000. The character of tho peoplo
and tho population of tho islaud havo
not changed very much siuco 3000
years ago when tho Apostlo 1'aul had
tho following to saylin regard to them
iu his opistlo to Titus:
"For their aro many unruly and vain
talkers nnd deceivers whoso mouths
must bo stopped who bubvert wliblo
houses teaching things which they
ought not for filthy lucre's sake. Ono
of themselves even a prophet of their
own said Tho Cretiaus are always liais
evil beasts blow hollies. This witness Is
true. Whrrcupon rebuko them sharply
that they may bo sound in tho faith.
Thoy piofess to know God; but iu works
they deny Him being ' ohominable and
disobedient aud unto every good work
reprobate."
A new industry has sprung up iu
Kansas within the past weeks that of
hunting jack rabbits for their pells
which find icody ?ald nt numerous
points in tho slate whero they are col-
lected and shipped to hat manufacturers
in tho cast. Tho discovery that tho gay
and festive jack has a commercial value
will undoubtedly prove his undoing.
The buffalo throvo uud multiplied upon
tha western plains so bis numbers wcio
as tho Bands of tho tea until ho becamo
a commodity. Then tho market hunters
declared unrelenting war upon him and
ho disappeared as in a night. Tho jack
rabbit is not constructed on graceful
lines but despite his ugliness and un-
gainliness ho is ono of tho picturesque
features of all typical prairie scenes nud
w great favorite with tho coursing clubs
by reasou of his wonderful fleetnets.
Tho fur of the jack rabbit it has been
ascertained is hotter ndapted to hot
makiDg than any other material aud it
is becuuso of this fact that it will toon
ctaso to decorate tho western landscape
Heretofore no effort has been mado to
savo the hide of the millions of jacks
that havo been slam by hunters. Bab-
bit hunters now find added zest to I heir
favorite sport for they are enabled to
disposo of tho hides for enough to yield
them a uico profit iu addition to having
tho usual amount of enjoyment. Ynlc

Imported Afillctions.
It sometimes pays to let well -enough
alone. Tho English sparrow was im
ported to this country some years ago to
eat up the worms which wcic destroying
trees in city parks. Sinco then the
English sparrow has grown so numerous
that it ban taken poscsaion of tho entire
country driven out all thcuativo song
birds aud become a nuisance impossible
to abate.
A new species of hyacinth was
bruught into Florida not n grcit while
ago as u curiosity. Now several rivers of
that stalo aro so choked with hyacinth
that nuvagaliou is impeded and Flori-
da's representatives in congress liuvo
been endeavoring to sccuro an appropri-
ation to rid them of tho growth.
A few years sgo a Boston entomolo-
gist imported a handful of gypsy moths
to add to his collection. .Some of them
i )
escaped aud tho stats' of Massachusetts
has sinco expended half n million dollais
in fighting gypsy moths and will have to
spend at least a million more beforo the
pest is exterminated. Tho legislature
has been asked for appropriations of
8200000 a year for the next firo years
for this purpose.
Californiafruit growers wero much
troubled by tho devastations of ao insect
called the black scale. Finally tho state
obtained from Auslialia a liltlo beetle
which devours the black scale. The
damages from this source lu.vo conse-
quently been much diminished; but the
beetle is thriving so well and spreading
io rapidly that fears aro entcrtaincd'of
its becoming a greater pest than thn in-
sect it preys on.
Half a dozen rabbits were imported
into Australia from England. Tho Aus-
Indian government has ever bince had a
robust rabbit problem on its hands.
Millions have btcn ttpcut in trying to
eradicato tho evil with tho lesult that
each f-ucctediu; year thero nro a few
million more rabbiu than tho year be-
fore. Handsome prizes have been
offered by tho government to inventors
and Hcienti.-ts who would find a way to
relieve tho country of its affliction but
Eo far without buccal. -K. C. Journal.
