  • Content Description: Photograph taken for a newspaper owned by the Oklahoma Publishing Company. Caption: "COLLISION NEAR CITY KILLS ONE, HURTS FIVE, Sudden death resulted from the smashup Sunday south of Oklahoma City, Highway patrol trooper Herman Allen, Above, is inspecting the automobile in which Mrs. Mildred Ladell Walling, 24, of Velma, was killed and three other seriously injured. STATE TRAFFIC DEATHS 1952 to date, 521; November, 66. 1951 to date, 519; November, 65. Two persons died in traffic accidents Sunday, boosting the Thanksgiving weekend highway death toll in Oklahoma to 11. Killed Sunday were: MRS.MILDRED LADELL WALLING, 24 Velma. HENRY DUANE FOX, 21, Fort Worth, Texas. Mrs. Walling was killed instantly when her husband's car crashed head on into another automobile at the intersection of U.S. 62 and SH 37 about four miles south of Will Rogers airport. Her husband, Robert David Walling, 25, was taken to Mercy hospital with facial cuts, a broken leg and broken right ankle. His condition was termed serious. TWO CHILDREN HURT, One of the couple's two children, Huck, 3, was in critical condition with internal injuries and a possible skull fracture. The other child, Sandy, 5 1/2, was in serious condition with possible internal injuries and an injured knee. Driver of the other car, Lawrence VanPelt, 39, Dallas, Texas also was taken to Mercy hospital in critical conditions. He suffered internal and head injuries and cut and bruises. A passenger in his car, Mrs. Katherine Louise Shepard, 32, also of Dallas, was under treatment for a compound pelvis fracture. Her condition was described as serious. Highway patrol troopers Johnny Edwards, Herman Allen and Lieut. Jack Herbert investigated the spectacular crash."
