THE OLD MAN IS RILID.
I've slio got to cuss or preach, so 1 believe I'll oreacta.
There ain't real wise men, but some folks is bigger fools
than others, and we have sho got mor'n of our sheer of the
bigger ones.
Here conies a humin donkey an'°tells me that if it were nt
for the cotton "operators," as he called 'em (gamblers 1 call
'em) the cotton farmers couldn't g!t tive cents a pound for
cotton. Good Lord! an' slews an' slews of our folks swallow
that kind of tommy rot.
Nobody but a set of f > >M would let such p ' ltil^as th*
cotton gamblers live in th t o > j itry, but when on top of let' ia
'<*m live in the country we let Vm miiiie the pric-*, what on
earth can we offer as an exens t Here we are, attorneys !• r
the producers, got to go int > court vith no case. When the
judge calls for our side, we got to git up and su.v:
" We represent the c itton produc^i'i.. we've got a cinch on
the cotton crop of the world, we mad ' more cotton an' better |
cotton than everybody else put together, but we can't get a
fa r price."
An' the judge, he will begin to inquire around a little, an' he
willffndout that the price is m,ide by a little bunch o' gain biers
up New York way, aad th it these gimblers don't produce
aoy cottou aad don't manufactur' any cotton and don't, handle
any actual cotton, an' then he Will tind there's only a few
hundred of 'em atrin about a millionan' a half of the producers
an' presently it will dawn on the judge that he is up agin
about the biggest en' finest collect'on of fools on the face of
the green yearth. and he Will want to know why this bunch
of farmers don't git together and wipi3 these gamblers off of
the face of the yearth. An' timlly, he will say, "Git out, you
luve got the g iods an' got the numb?rs, whit do you mean by
lettin' a little Inndful n >ld you up? Orviaizi your for -es an'
eat :em up. This court will protect the weaker, but it don't
take no stock in a great big six footer, that ccmes up here
whinin' that a little feller no mor'n tive foot high has hit him
in the eye.''
An' that's the size of it. An' that's the way it lool
to an impartial outsider. Everybody knows that sure enough
business was never yit helped by gamblin' an' never will be.
Everybody knows that the cotton farmers hav-> got a cinch,
an, everydody knows that he's eternally howiiu'for justice.
Why'n thunder, then, didn't he go a head th' git justice?
He's big enuf aad strong enuf. Why don't he git justice?
Because he is too wood 'n headed. That's what's toe matter
with him. He organizes an'sets up leaders, an' the leaders
work night an' day, give their time an' money, plan the cat-
tle, tell the soldiers what to do. 1 lie plan looks irood, like a
winner, but the soldiers repudiate the leaders, r 'fijsy t<, obey
orders, an, fly like sheep ;:t the charge of a i w hundred gt ni.
biers. Then, when the battle is lost, these cowardly an foolish
soldiers go arouud whinin' about the leaders who have ni^st
killed their fool selves trying ti win battles with a lot of
scrubs.
Sometimes 1 think the leaders are tin bUx'si fills >f al
for trying to make pressed brick out of a 1 >t o* clay that
wouldn't make good debits.
I've been a fightia'for th : ri^'it f >r thirty years, an' exo-'Ct
to keep on d ling it'but I'll b? jigger ; 1 if [ don't believe it
will be necessary for these peo[ le who have got the uiost sol-
id position of any producers in the world to be caught one at
a time an' have beat into 'em with clubs a little sense, a little
courage an' a little loyalalty. Tnen we will win o ittles. May-
hi some of you w m't lit! my s *rm ia, ar.ywiy, it's n true us
gospel, an' I don't care whether you like it or not.

off the farmers, especially the farm products, most ol balanc e
mentioned above. If the General succeeds in his suits—and
he will—he \^ill save millions of dollars to the common poo*
pie of Oklahoma. Just think of the wheat crop this year,
about 30,000,000 bushels, most of which is shipped. $300.-
000 can be saved on that cereal alone. Now count the other
grain, live stock, cotton and coal. The railroads have gather-
ed many millions off the common people the past few years.
Suits have alsi, been tiled by General Cromwell against the
coal u iues in the Indian Territory.
