before Squire Katon of
township last Saturday. The court
room was crowded and expressions of
sympathy for the teacher were heard
on all sides. Attorney Williams of
Stillwater represented .Miss Hopkins,
and when the jury rendered their de-
cision in favor of Miss Hopkins, which
they did without leaving their seats,
it was plainly evident that the ver-
dict met with the approval of every-
one. Someone suggested passing the
hat to pay the attorney fee which
was $10. This was done and if the
fee had been $50 it would have been
the same, for the men almost fought
to get near enough to the hat to drop
In their money. An Incident oc-
curred after the arrest of Miss Hop-
kins. worth telling. Miss Hopkins
appeared before the squire to answer
to the charge of whipping young Flti-
water and upon her return to the
school room, she found that some of
her larger pupils, some of whom were
young men about six feet tall, had
been enjoying a free-for-all fight.
She didn't wait for preliminaries
but gave each of them a good sound
thrashing forthwith. Miss Hopkins
has grit to keep that school in order
and we are glad to know that the
school board and the best peoplo in
the district stand ready to give her
all the assistance possible.—Cushing

self-explanitory:
S. C. Masterson, the man indicted
at Stillwater, Okla., on the charge of
rape and who was recently appre-
hended at Eldon, said to have been a
fugitive from justice, has applied
for a writ of injunction restraining
Sheriff B. F. Slutts from giving limy
into the custody of Sheriff O.^i
Annis. who recently ar.ived to take
Masterson uack to Oklahoma for
trial. This is the outcome of the re-
fusal Judge Eichelberger to grant an
order releasing Masterson from cus-
tody on his habeas corpus petition,
recently heard in Itloomlield. In his
ruling on the petition the court di-
rected that Masterson be turned
over to the Oklahoma sheriff at 12
o'clock lust Friday unless an appeal
bond In the sum of $500 was filed be-
fore time. The bond was filed be-
fore tho expiration of the time set
and a notice of appeal to the supreme
court filed. Masterson in his prayer
for an injunction says that Sheriff
Slutts intends to turn him over to
Sheriff Annis and that tho latter In-
tends to, and will, unless restrained
by the order of the court, take pos-
session of tho prisoner and take him
back to Oklahoma, In spite of tho
fact that he has appealed to the
supreme court. Plaintiff asks that
an order be made restraining Sheriff
Slutts from delivering and Sheriff
Annis from taking possession of him
until such time as a hearing on tho
appeal may bo had. Jaques i
