K A LP II ARNOLD KILLS
"BUCK" TROUT
At thf Arnold Farm in McClain Coun-
ty at Noon on Sunday—Arnold
Pleads Self-Defense.
Ralph Arnold shot and killed
"Buck' Trout at the Arnold farm, one
and one-half miles south of the E. B.
Johnson's farms, in McClain county,
on Sunday, May 28, 1910, about noon.
The weapon used was a double-bar rell-
1 shot gun, and both loads were fired
one taking effect in the left side of
Trout's head and the other under his
left arm. Trout lived only a few
minutes. Arnold wetft to Purcell and
gave himself up. His plea will be
self-defense.
Both are well known farmers of
their neighborhood, aged about 35
years, and both married, with child-
ren. The wife of the deceased was
formerly Miss Ada Phillips, of the
well known Phillips family. They
have one son, a boy 12 or l.'J years of
age. The boy is owner of some 210
acres of fine land, on which the Trouts
were living and farming at the time
of the tragedy. Mrs. Arnold is at
present in Montana with several of
their children, only one child, a boy
some 1 *5 years of age, being at home.
They formerly lived in the Franklin
neighborhood in this county, where
they were well ami favorably known.
As the Transcript gets the facts it
appears that Mr. Arnold and Mr.
Trout had gone to Purcell on Satur-
day, driving a team of mares belong-
ing to the former. Mr. Arnold left
Trout at Purcell and came to Norman
yesterday morning, and after arriving
here arranged to go to his farm with
Hob Stogner, who was going over to
adjust the Ottinger fire loss. He
'phoned from here to Trout to drive
his team home and after arriving
there, sent bis boy to the Trout place
after the team. The boy soon return-
ed without the team, saying that
Trout had abused him, cussed him out
and called him and his father names.
Just about this time Trout drove up
to the Arnold place with the team, and
he and Arnold had some bitter words,
following which, it is alledged by Ar-
nold and his son, Trout jumped from
the buggy with an open knife in his
hand and started towards Arnold.
Arnold ran to the house, got the shot
gun, and began shooting as Trout
came towards him with the open knife.
This is the story as told by Arnold
and his young son, the latter being
the only eye-witness to the tragedy.
The men are said to have been close
fritnds and no occasion for enmity is
known. It was one of those sudden
gusts of passion, evidently, that some-
tims results in death.
It is said the young son of Mr.
Trout witnssed the killing from a
short distance, having followed his
father from the Trout place. He ran
home and told his mother. Mrs.
Trout came at once, and with help of
neighbors took Trout into the Arnold
house and laid him on a bed, where he
gave but one gasp. His death was
really instantanous, as he was just
slightly breathing when picked up.
Arnold went to Purcell and gave
himself up, and called Attorney Ben
Williams to defend him. It is be-
lieved he will be admitted to bail.
