The old timers of Enid who know
Charley Hunter real well will be
able to laugh real heartily at the
following romance in real life, that I e(j hook
I the WAVE clipped from the Perry'
Republican. Here in Enid we all
know that Hunter has made a lifr
time struggle to be perfectly honest
and now the opportunity has come
to prove up in the grand stand while
the galleries are filll looking for
straight timber for the constitution-
al convention. Some may think Sar
gent Hunter is overdoing a good
thing, but we don't think so, Charley
don't need the mosey as his rent roll
down at Roosevelt and Mountain
Park brings him a Vanderbilt income
he would I ke to save his government
a little money these hard a.id flicker-
ing times. Here is what the Perry
Republican published:—
"A report from Oklahoma City
state* that unless Judge Burwell
should interfere successfully, there
is likely to be a vacancy in the office
of his chief clerk, held by Charles
Hunter, the Rough Rider friend of
President Roosevelt.
Hunter says that the fee system is
so vicious that his conscience will not
permit him to accept the thousands
of doilarf in salary which he feels a
clerk of an ^Oklabooia court -cannot
honestly earn. This is certainly a
rare case and an exceeding y odd
public officia 1.

with a farmer on the brick or asphalt

being too high and that would not
freely, yes eagerly accept all that
the law, fee system or any other sys-
tem would allow bimand sometimes
a little more,
A month or two ago Hunter gave
weight to his opinion in this matter
by writing a long letter to the De-
partment of Justice in which he
called attention to the excessive fee
system in Oklahoma, and recommend-
ing that the clerks be put on a stipu-
lated salary of $3,500 a year,
In ninety days the clerk fees in
Hunter's district amounted to more
than #8,000, qr a total of between
$18,000 and $20,000 a year. Hunter
Insists that ttis is little short of
wholesale robbery of litigants and
that this evil should be corrected.
Hunter is the first known excep-
tion totbe rule that in Oklahoma
district coutt clerks have resorted
to almost every known scheme to
Increase, rather than diminish, tbclr
fees. Should this third reason be
the true one for his wishing to retire
from office, he will stand as one of
the most conspicuous, isolated exam-
ples of an officeholder with an abj
normal conscience to be found in the
Weft, and possibly the United
States."
