V THE SHOE FITS WEAR IT
Republicans stand by thuir newspa-
pers. They subscribe for them. They
buy watered stock in them. They so-
licit— fool democrats to do the stttne.
They give-them all of their official pat-
ronage. They pay them for puffs.
They write for them and they adver-
tise in them.
How unlike a republican in this re-
spect is a democrat, that is a majority
of democrats. E ect a democrat to
office and his patronage goes to a re-
publican paper. Examine his sub-
scription list and you find him in ar-
ears in three cases out of five. If you
want to find his business card look in
a republican paper for it. If he has a le-
gal notice consuit the republican press.
If he is an office holder watch him
hang around the republican newspa-
pers until six weeks before the election
and then see him march over to his
own party paper and plank down
twenty-five cents on subscription coupl-
ed with the advice to give e'm h—1
while it 'lasts.
The average democrat is like Mark
Twain's uncle, he is ever ready to
put his hands down deep into
his troueer pockets and make the ed-
tor rich with his advice; but when it
comes to supporting his party newspa-
per, by paying up his subscription and
giving it his private and publican pat
ronage and his moral support he is
not there.
In this county the republican news-
papers are receiving nearly every dol-
ars worth ol democrat patronage
official and private. They have been
receiving it from the first day the
democrats were installed in office down
to this hour.
In this territory the republican party
has been keeping up an Associated
Press newspaper, for years by feeding
it $25,000 worth of patronage annually
and they now have the gall to ask the
democrats to take stock in another as-
sociated press paper to help mop them
as an c> ;anization from the face of the
earth • few Democrats who want
office bad that you can smell it on
their oreath as they p^ss along the
streets, have put their money into it.
If the democrats of this county and
territory, and especially those holding
office by the grace of the democratic
newspapers, will stop giving their pri-
vate and official patronage to the op-
position press, and will encourage the
local democratic papers, that fought
their battles for them; they will have
no need of a ten dollar silk stocking
Jeffersonian club to hold the party to
gether.
The sockless masses and the shirtless
editors of the democratre party, have
but little use for, and but little inter-
est in common with, the office holding
silk stocking, would-be leadership of
the democratic party in this terri
tory.
Church Entertainment
The entertainment given last
night by the ladies of the Epis-
copal church, under the direc-
tion of Victor F. Ertfart was a grand
success in every sense of the word.
The attendance was large and every
one seemed charmed with the charac-
ter of the performance. For amateurs
each one played their parts to per-
fection and the costumes and stage set-
ting were simply gorgeous. Professor
Erhart as a violinist is the finest ever
heard in El Reno. He is simply
master of this most difficult of all mu-
sical instruments.
Mrs. Erhart who took a prominent
part in the evening's program is
talentet elocutionist. Each one of the
local celebrities deserves special men
tion if space would permit; but suffice
it to say that the big girls in their glit-
tering costumes were lovely to be-
hold and acted well their several
parts; but the little girls, the tiny
cherubs—cotnpauions of ,,the flowers—
looked as graceful as the fair Aurora
and as beautiful and as pure as the
snow. In the dance they were a per-
fect vision of lovliness and in the ren
dition of their several parts accom
plished little stars.
The big girls will have to look out
for their laurels.

Out Of Danger.
The announcement is made by the
attending physician that president
McKinley has passed the critical peri-
od, and that they feel sure now of his
ultimate recovery, unless possibly some
unsforseen complications should arise.
The "'Springfield Ladies Saturday
Club" gave a reception to Mrs. Dr.
Hensley Wednesday evening at the
home of Mrs. Bouslog. The club
voiced their regret at the departure of
Mrs. Hensley in the following resolu-
tions which were read during the after-
noon :
"The Springfield Ladies Saturday
Club, having been asked to accept the
resignation of Mrs. Emma Hensley as
their treasurer, and to part with her
permanently as a member of the club,
would take this occasion to express to
her, and its friends the high esteem
in which she is held by the club and
the unanimous regret of its members
that they must relinquish their claim
to her presence and to her services in
favor of new claims in a new home
Therefore be it
Resolved, That in the removal of
Mrs. Hensley the clnb will lose a most
faithful member, equally faithful,
whether called to the president's chair
or to the smallest duty in its rank
and file. One upon whom the old
members relied and to whom the new
members were indebted for a pleasant
greeting. A call or other little atten-
tion so pleasing to the stranger, and
further, be it
Resolved. That if the Saturday club
must lose so good a member we are in
part consoled by the fact that the up-
lifting influences, the high ideals of
life, the spirit of progress and affec-
tionate and loyal regard for each other
which we have tried to foster in the
club. These iafluences could not be
placed in better hands to be carried
out and on into the world to be repro-
duced and so fulfill one of our highest
aims—helpfulness to others, and
further, be it
Resolved,That we do heartily com-
mend Mrs. Hensley to such club con-
nections as she may seek, and bespeak
for her the welcome that we know she
will deserve. And if it be hers to lay
the foundations to do pioneer work for
women in new fields, we bid her God
speed, and hope that she may find in
the Saturday club life of the years
that have past many helpful points for
her work, as well as tender memories
of congenial companionship. By or-
der of the S. L. S. C.— Springfield
Democrat.
