Washington, I). C., Aug. IB.—
Democrat, Hennessey—It stated by
department officials that Saturday,
September Kith at IS! m. is the day
fixed lor opening the Cherokee strip.
Allotments all in and approved, and
the proclamation will appear next
Monday. There will be seven
counties in the strip and four land
offices, located substantially as
heretofore given out, except that the
land oflice 011 the Rock Island w ill

the strip north and south instead of

lie is a good citizen, a square busi
ness man, and will make a careful,
prudent official. While the fight
lor this position has been spirited
between various local applicants for
this office, all concede that Mr.
Caldwell has made a clean, honorable
fight. He has won an honorable
victory, and receives the con-
gratulations of all opponents who
bow gracefully to the result.

When a municipality dep? eciates
its own scrip, individuals are more
liable to distrust it. This is what
Kingfisher county does by paying
two prices for work and materials
simply because she pays in scrip.
Retusing to take her own paper from
those who owe her for license, etc.,

The boys tell i good story on
Sterling Richardson while in Chic igo
last week. It was stated that
Sterling was out 011 the tair grounds
with Guy Gil lett and L. I'. King,
had spent all of his money but
nicketvfhich lie was saving to pay
street 1 .r fare to his hotel. Sterling
becair . tired and told the boys ho
was gol.ig back to the hotel, and
boarded the street car, anil after
riding for some time discovered that
he was on a car which kept going
round and round and was soon taken
back to where he started, llight
there the fun commenced. The
boys had gone and Sterling was still
at the grounds without a cent, but
skirmishing around happened to run
across the boys again and borrowed
enough mone' lo get home on. We
suppose such tricks are there simply
to catj 1 the average westerner, and
so far Sterling is the oniy one from
Oklah' «'hich has been t;<ok in.
They are all hoine now, King and
Guy < ing the laughing and Sterling
paying Live bills.

The Democrat rises to ask why
tin' county commissioners insist 011
cash for saloon license instead ol
receiving scrip and stopping inter-

from those who owe it, the county
would create a demand for scrip and
advance the price. Gentlemen of

Elsewhkke is published an article
"a western man for president." The
article is from the Kansas City

banker with gold bearing instincts.
If Witten were to choose a western

well, he comes from the east.
When a disreputable pool forms
at the county seat, backed by other
county scats to force county inter-

have no moral right to lend aid by
refusing paper of the county,

interest.

reason why the east is cut up into
