DAVENPORT, OKLAHOMA, THURSDAY, FEBUARY 14, 191X
NUMBER 51
THRIFT SPENDING
and
SPEND THRIFTING.
By Ellis Parker Butler
Auther of " Pigs are Pigs"
Peter Patriot, had a penny
' Sammy Slack had a cent
Peter put his penny in his poc-
ket untill he had 25 cents and then
he bought a Thrift Stamp.
Thus Peter had saved 25 cents
for himself; he had loaned 25 cents
to the government; he had per-
mitted the government to buy 25
cents worth of goods or services
to win the war; he had helped
business, himself, his country.
He was Peter Patriot.
Sammy Slacker spent his cent
for some silly, insignificant, stuff,
sweets or something, and saved
nothing, did not help the govern-
ment and was simply selfish Sam-
my Slacker.
Peter's purchase paves a path
to permanent prosparity; Sam-
mies silly spending signifies sor-
row some day.

The rich families of New York
City have asked Hoover to pre-
pare menues for them. These
people have neeer known what it
is to stint their lavish use of foods
but in this war time they have
asked Hoover to regulate their]
tables. They desire to fight the!
Kaiser on their tables.
Here is the rations as doled out
b. Hoover f each nerson
per week, excluding the substi-
tutes:
One-half pound of butter, iuclu-
ilir that for cooking; two
andonu-Lu.f iiuundsoi red meat
of which only one-half pound may
be pork; three pounds of Victory
bread, one-half pound of flour to
be used in sauces and gravies;
three-fourths of a pound of sugar,
including jihat used in cooking.
Exta Mgar may be used for
canning r.nd preserving.

Our attention was called to the
fact that we made a serious mis—
take last week in the New Era
