It is currently reported, and con-
fidentially believed, that the sugar
trust imported recently under the
tycKinley free sugar scedual, 400,-
000 ton? of raw sugar. The tax
of 40 per cent advaloram on raw
suirar imposed by the senate amend-
ments to the Wilson bill, must in
itself throw many millions into the
capacious pockets of that hidra
beaded monster, whose power in
matters of legislation are greater
than the power ol the people. The
proportion of this enormous steel

over to the J udeses who betrayed

THE RECORD Or CONGRESS.
The record of the present Con
grc^s inspires pride in its past and
confidence in its future. Within
the history of the government no
Congress has so nearly fulfilled its
pledges upon which it was elected.
It was commissioned by the people
to repeal the purchasing clause of
the Sherman law of 181)0, which
has been done. It was directed by
the votea of the people to repeal
the odious Federal elections law,
aud that has been accomplished.
It was instructed by the people,
through the ballot b<«x, to wipe out
the iniquitous McKinley law, and
that promise has been discharged.
It was enjoyed to economise in the
expenditures of the government,
wherever it was possible to do so,
and 600 useless offices have been
dispensed with, with a saving in
salaries of $700,000 annually. In
adlition to this, it has caused sav-
ings in the regular appropriations
aggregating nearly #50,000,000.
Upon the record of the Democrat-
ic party can wel atTord an appeal to
the country. But the half has not
been told. In the repeal of the
McKinley law and the substitution
of a measure which puts 100 items
ot domestic necessity, now taxed
enormously, on the free list, among
them wool, lumber, Halt, twine,
grain bags, plows reapers and all
agricultural machinery and imple-

A WAY OUT OP IT.
The present low prices of wheat
would seem to indicate a speculat-
ive fraud in 6ome de)>artment of
commerce. Returns from all over
the United States show a general
shortage of all crops, and wheat in
particular, and yet we see that while
other cereals ' go up" on the mark-
els, wheat i4goes dotvn." This can-
not be a natural result of exchange.
Supply the demand are the two
prime factors in political economy,
and effort is the great connecting
link which produces value. Now,
the effort has been put fourth for
gigantic returns, and the yalue must
ceriainiy exist. This' vaiue is cen-
tered, to a great extent, in wheat;
this should create a high market for
that cereal, the present low price
notwithstanding.
A large per cent of our farmers
have been compelled to sell; others
there are who will be forced to the
taine extremity. Those who can
hold their wheat for the inevitable
wheat boom will be well paid for
their confidence and business acu-
men, provided they uso the power
that is vested iu them.
Many there are who will feed
their wheat sooner than dispose of
it at the present low prices, and all
such persons will certainly reap a
rich reward. It is worthy of note
that hog raising is claiming the at-
tention ol some of our best farmers
ami we liinl^heni ''stocking up" on
that line iu a way that shows deter-
mination to do business in a busi-
ness way as applied to the farm.
Farmers, by helping one-another,
help themselves; for help, in a busi-
ness way, always rebounds advan-
tageously to the helper. Men are
in error when they attribute market
phenomena to legislation politio.
The immense fortunes accumulated
through speculation are attaiued
through the intrigue of corpora-
tions and trusts. The laws may
regulate such concerns to a great ex-
tent, but the only thing that can
