OODNCIL PROCEEDINGS.
Council met last night in regular
session, Mayor Holland in the chair.
Quorum present. Reading of minutes
dispersed with. City clerk's report for
the month of August read and refered
to finance committee.
Mentz requested that some other mom
ber of the council be appointed in hi.*
place on the committee to audit the
city treasurer's accounts. Chair appoint-
ed Dulany.
Cr inmittee appointed at last meeting
in the matter of redisricting the eic\
and reducing the same to four wards,
was not ready to report, and asked fur-
ther time, which was graateu.
Petition from the citizens of Perry
that the council pass and enforce an
ordinance, prohibiting the sale of iritoxi
acting li<|Uora within the limits of the
city of Perry between the hours of 1
o'clock Saturday night and 1- o'clock
Sunday night. On motion petition re-
ceived and hied. Assistant County At-
torney Enright addressing the council
said, in substance, he was of the opinion
that there is law enough now on the
statutes, bearing upon this matter of
Sunday violations, if it wa*i only enforc
ed. No ordinance is needed, as the law
if enforced by proper procoeduro, would
be sufficient.
Dulany introduced ordinance No. 205,
au ordinance providing for the payment
of a license or occupation tax in city
warrants, was read second time and
under suspension of rules passed to
third reading by sections and adopted.
City Attorney Bowles was of the opinion
that under the law the city tresurrr had
no right to receive city script for saloon
license.
That the matter may be tested in
court, mandamus proceedings have been
commenced against the city treasurer,
compelling him to receive city warrants
inpayment of license, or show cause
why.
Mr. Hudson, who is interested in t#ie
insurance business, asked permission to
address the council, which was granted;-
He referred to the demand by a numl, -
of our citizens for a lower rate of insur
ance within the city, and said that in
surance companies were ready and will
ing to reduce rates as soon as they were
assured that the city had provided Tor
some plan or system for extinguish)ny
tires, and suggested that pome action be
taken by the council, to provide a volun
teer tire department. The question
arose as to what provision had been
made for h(«e. and after some discussion
moved by Mentz that the matter bo l.iid
over until next meeting. Adopted.
Motion by Garnett that the fire chief
be and is hereby instructed to organize
a volunteer lire department. Adopted.
Motion by Dulany that the firoand
water committee be instructed to draft
some plan that wo may go by in pro
viding for a volunteer fire department
and report at next meeting Adopted.
